Book Refuge Cove (The New Americana Series Book 2) Review :

This book was not what I've come to expect from a Janet Dailey novel. Did Janet actually write this book before she died in 2013? I doubt it. Someone else must be writing under her name. Anyway, this could've been a good book if our "heroine" (Emma) wasn't so pathetically dumb! (WARNING: SOME SPOILERS AHEAD!)Emma is a lonely, thirty-something teacher who meets a handsome guy (Boone) at a church dance in Salt Lake City and is instantly "swept off her feet" when he shows her a picture of a beautiful log house in Alaska and asks her to marry him. She's so desperate for love that she immediately accepts his proposal, quits her job and follows him to Ketchikan with her life savings of $17,000 in cash. He insisted on cash, naturally, because the guy is a con man. But Emma is too dumb to figure this out.As soon as Emma arrives in Alaska, Boone "marries" her in a fake ceremony, takes her money, and carries her off to a filthy, dilapidated house trailer deep in the bush, where he's been cooking meth. Fearing he intends to rape her, Emma sets the trailer on fire and flees into the wilderness on foot, chased by Boone and his dogs. Completely lost and miles from civilization, she gets stuck in a bog until she's miraculously rescued by our hero (John), a Native American bush pilot. He takes her to his cabin (a real cabin this time) and they quickly fall in love. Insta-love is a familiar trope in books these days, but really? Three days? Here's the part that made absolutely no sense to me. What on earth was Boone--a meth-cooking Alaskan bushman--doing at a church dance in Salt Lake City, of all places? Why did this handsome man have to fly all the way to Utah to seduce a woman gullible enough to fall for his lies? Are there no lonely, gullible females in Alaska? I never found an explanation for this mystery, but it got even crazier. It seems he'd done this before, when he snagged a lonely woman in Boise and lured her to Alaska with promises of love and marriage. His first "fake bride" disappeared. Did he kill her?Insta-love is soon joined by another popular trope: insta-insanity. Boone is so furious over Emma's escape that he morphs into a vengeful psychopath, determined to recapture his "bride" and do unspeakable things to the woman who fled to the arms of another man. John is a good guy who tries to keep Emma safe, but she's dumb enough to open the door when Boone shows up at her hotel room. There's more foolishness, but you get the idea.I liked John and his teenage son, David. Their growing relationship after years of separation forms a satisfying subplot in the story. I also enjoyed the Alaskan scenery and detailed descriptions of Ketchikan and its environs. The suspenseful, dramatic ending and sweet HEA made up for some of the absurdity. Kudos also for no explicit sex scenes and limited use of profanity. Three stars overall.
Sex and too much cursing. Using God's Name is inexcusable. This is a very good story that does need the extra to sell.
